I find myself drawn to semi-abandoned buildings in desolate locations. They have a sculptural quality that I appreciate. I like the light and shadows. And I love the way such places are both the ultimate destiny for much of the built environment as well as a tremendous source of possibility.
These buildings and their general surroundings are cheap and flexible. If you wait long enough even the most hardened zoning regulations and building codes become… irrelevant. The town dies. Officials turn a blind eye. And the right people can come together and reinvent themselves along with these buildings. Or not… There’s always the wrecking ball. Or the inevitable rust and rot of the earth.
